Just Passing This Along
I want to take a minute and put the word out that Steven Brust, aka [info]skzbrust, is in dire financial straits. He's had some health problems in the past year or so, and naturally, being an author, he has no medical insurance. His bill is in the six figure range, and the hospital has just put a lien on his house. He's also having problems with the IRS. God knows how much more legal fees are going to cost him.

Who my favorite fantasy author is shifts with the wind, but on most days, it's Steven. I've worn through a couple of copies of Jhereg over the years. I don't know how many copies of The Phoenix Guards I've been through – I tend to loan them out and not get them back – but it's easily in my top five favorite books. We even named our cat after Tazendra.

Steven's work is funny, intelligent, complex, and unexpectedly deep. The world he has created is like a second home for me, and Steven's work is in many ways the underpinning for my own. Without him, I would not be a storyteller. His books were there for me through the darkest times of my life, and without him I very well might not be alive to tell stories at all.

Because of what his work has meant to me I want to help however I can, so I'm spreading the word and I'm going to see what I can give. And if you're a fan of his, I'd appreciate it if you'd do the same – and most of all, keep spreading the word.

If you would like to give, go here. It's not just Steven I'm worried about. It's Vlad and Morrolan and Kragar and Loiosh and Aliera and Khaavren and Sethra . . . and . . . and.

I don't know Steven, but I consider the rest to be friends.

I'm a fan of his too. I can't spare more than five bucks, but at least it's something... :(

Get sick, lose your house.

Makes sense.

Thank you for keeping this circulating, sweetie. I do know Steven. He's as cool as he sounds when he's writing and I wish I could do more to help him.

I do, too. He's just . . . I don't know where I'd be without him. I think the only other author who has had as much of an effect on my work, on my interior landscape, is probably Fritz Leiber with his Lankhmar books.

I've just read his journal entry for today and the Jhereg Foundation is going amazingly well. It looks like the outpouring of fan support in the past week is going to succeed in paying Steven's legal fees and go a long way toward covering his living expenses while the proceedings are underway.

And most importantly: Knowing we've got his back is letting him relax and get back to writing. He's three chapters into Iorich.

I hope it does help; I'd hate to see him hamstrung by this. I was very glad to read that he was working, still. That's hopeful.

You can also get this out to a bigger audience here:

Neil often does charity shoutouts on his blog. Hopefully he'll see this one.

I sent Neil a note via the form above; but I'm sure that you'll be more eloquent than I in winning support for Mr. Brust. Good luck!

That's a really swift idea! Thanks! I'll try to let him know about it. I hope he's heard about it already. If he made an announcement, that would help a LOT.

You caught me in the middle of reading the two newer Khaavren books.

I actually didn't really *click* on Brust as one of my favorite authors until I accidentally stumbled upon a book of his not set in that universe. I picked up Agyar when I was in Ann Arbor last year, thinking it was a Jhereg-series book, but it's actually set in present-day Ohio. I loved it, and thought hmm, he writes stuff that's rather different... and then I looked for more and found The Sun, the Moon, and the Stars</a> at Pandemonium here in Cambridge. That cemented my opinion that he's one of my favorite writers.

And I didn't even know he was on LJ.

I read Agyar, and it was good, but I didn't love it the way I love his Vlad books. Alas. I would like to see him do more stuff not set in that universe, though, in the future.
