"This just keeps getting better and better."
Incoming: a personal update. Right now: LJ is serious business.

For those of you who have missed the wank, SUP, LiveJournal's new overlords, have gotten rid of the "Basic" account feature, which means all new accounts must be either "Paid" accounts or "Plus" accounts.

The revised FAQ page which was the first and only place the change was announced.

Here's the skinny via [info]no_lj_ads, with a lot of interesting and helpful information, including bitching addresses.

Here is the [info]news post in which SUP failed to give LJ users notice of this development.

An epic thread within that post where a new-to-LJ member of management makes a feeble response to allegations of massive upfuckery, and completely ignores the question of why SUP didn't notify users of this new policy as soon as or even before it was implemented.

Instead, he explains that management thought that the choice between Basic, Plus, and Paid was too confusing to new users.

That's right. People are just that stupid.

Again, he tries to respond, this time claiming that the elimination of Basic accounts does not affect existing LJ users.

As this post by [info]brad shows, the Advisory committee argued against this, but were totally ignored.

I am absolutely enraged.

First, they didn't tell anyone they had done it, or give warning they were going to do it.

Second, while I understand they are a business and I want them to make money because I like LiveJournal, I think it was a shitty thing to do from the users' perspective. It's actively hostile to the way most fandom-driven LJ users operate, and the unavoidability of advertising is going to discourage new users from signing up.

There must be a middle ground, here, perhaps allowing loyalty tokens for those with paid accounts, allowing them to open new Basic accounts.

Anyway, I'm so pissed about this latest asshaberdashery that I haven't even been able to articulate it in a post until now, and I'm still not sure I can accomplish it.

I'm furious with SUP. The only reason I have not left LJ completely is because a) all my friends are here and b) I have a permanent account, which was a gift from a friend. I promised myself I would keep the journal for at least five years after he bought that for me (essentially the amount of paid time an equal amount of money would get you), and I intend to stand by that.

There's also the fact that I don't like any of the other available platforms. I've gotten used to the comment thread style of LJ's interface, and I don't want to give it up in favor of the single-stream style of other blogging platforms. The sites created with LJ's open-source software, DeadJournal, GreatestJournal, InsaneJournal, are either unattractive to look at or have operating problems.

So I'm staying, but I am not giving LJ any more money until they shape up, which may mean I never give them another dime, period.

I suggest you consider doing the same. In the meantime, Firefox's AdBlock Plus extension is amazing, as is NoScript. Between them, I don't often have to see anything I don't want to see. Unfortunately, there is no way to filter the stupidity out of the internet. It's like real life that way.

Another interesting link: LiveJournal censors "Most Popular Interests" page, removing terms like "bisexuality," "sex," "depression," "yaoi," "porn," "pain," "boys," "guys," and others.

I'm ignorant of what is going on, but only because I intend to stay at Plus. I have no need for anything else, so.

Fortunately, I have ample time to move my picture hosting elsewhere before my paid account expires.

In the absence of major contrition from LJ management - and maybe even in the presence of it - I shan't be renewing.

I haven't been renewing my LJ subscription for about a year now because of their continued inability to interact with the users on a level above that used with a semi-retarded infant. Looks like they're not going to get any money for a while yet.

Re: censoring the popular interests page, one wonders why they would do that. Do they think anybody will believe that LJ is the only place on the internet where the across-the-board average user isn't thirteen and sex-obsessed? Pshaw. LJ practically coined that stereotype.

I really don't understand why it seems so heinously difficult for them to get it into their thick skulls that THEIR USERS ARE NOT STUPID.

I'm not in the habit of reacting to LJ fuckery, but it's come to a point where I'm seriously considering moving elsewhere. The day that I see something odd (like an add) appear in my Basic Account is that day I will cut and run. Immediately.

Have just made my first LJ-admin-sucks rant on my LJ. Heh.

You know, I could have been sympathetic to a "we're running out of money so we have to put in more ads, sorry" announcement. But to say "We only did this so you poor dopes could understand how to register" is so incredibly insulting that I can only hope they just have a reaaallly bad Russian to English translating team.

Did you know that using Adblock and similar software is actually against the T&Cs for new accounts now? I found that out when I set this one up. I am happy to report that I am gleefully breaking those T&Cs right now.

STEAL THIS IDEA
[info]placeofhonour
2008-03-17 11:52 am UTC (link)
And you know what, actually? I can't do this myself because I've recently taken a solemn vow to stop posting to LJ and use my own independent MovableType blog instead (for reasons totally unrelated to the whole SUP fiasco), but someone really, really needs to start and really, seriously promote a community called [info]whyidontpay: a community where folk who've stopped paying their subscription post and explain why they did it. The idea is to document for SUP's perusal exactly why their decisions are resulting in them losing cash.

I totally agree that once again, SUP failed epicly in the communications department. However, the outrage over ads may be a generational or old LJ vs. new to LJ thing, because I asked my daughter if the ads on places like MySpace bug her (one reason I don't use the site), and she just looked at me strangely and said, "I don't even notice them." So if the next generation of users doesn't care about ads, it makes no sense for LJ to turn down the revenue.

Fun fact -- the "100 days" news article that we got in the English news community, was of course repeated in the Russian-language news community. Except there was one additional paragraph -- the one telling the Ruskies about the elimination of the basic account. (Well, it might have been two paragraphs. I forget.)

I heard about that on another comm, tracked down the post and asked my Russian coworker to translate it for me. He confirmed it.

This is on top of one of my friends having her account suspended without warning, without explanation. As far as anyone can tell, somebody is friends with LJ Abuse and declared that she was doing things in violation of the TOS to them.

And/or people are being targeted because they're friends of a recently suspended user.

Details at pay-the-piper.insanejournal.com.

Why do they keep pulling this shit? Look, it's their company and they can do whatever they want, and I have no plans to stop paying for the service. But they keep implementing new policies with NO WARNING WHATSOEVER, then dealing with the enraged fallout for the next several weeks, making at first feeble apologies, then sincere ones, maybe offering some token like an extra userpic or free extra day of paid account.

Are they fucking retarded? It's like they completely lack the ability to learn from mistakes, because they keep making the same stupid one OVER AND OVER. All they have to do is is go "Look, this is the new way we're going to run things, we're announcing it ahead of time, if you don't like it then don't let the door hit you where the good lord split you. Don't say we didn't warn you, because that's what we're doing now. Thank you and good night."

I lied; I found some words.

Centuries ago, my first sense of community-on-the-internet was the EZBoards forums. (Don't judge me.) Eventually that switched to Diaryland, then Diary-X, and then in 2002 I ended up on Livejournal. I didn't actually really use my journal until the summer of 2004, but that's still almost four years of steady use right there. Somewhere along the way a friend bought me a permanent account, because he had the money and I was pathetic about wanting one.

That's the history.

I have a ton of journals that I use for character RP, because I am still in one LJ-based game, Dirty Life. At this point, only three of those nineteen journals are paid accounts; none of them are set to last more than about two or three months, because two were two-month gifts and one was a year-long self-paid venture – almost a year ago. Maybe as late as May or June; not later than that, though, I don't think.

I miss having paid accounts for my characters. I miss the extra icon space, I miss the lack of ADVERTISEMENT all over half the pages I view. (I've been using a script in Firefox since, uh, plus accounts debuted, pretty much. Works a lot better than Adblock.)

I kind of wish that I had the ability to remember these problems at a point in time where they're not flooded with complaints, because I feel as though enough people calmly pointing out "this is not what you do; if you do this instead, you will get fewer angry complaints" might get through. It's a slim chance, but it might happen.

Just not when they're flooded with all the justifiable angry complaints.

What hasn't been made clear to me is whether SUP understands that people are ultimately going to vote with their feet on this and other impositions. Or are they simply banking on the idea that it would be too much trouble to shut one's LJ down and (as Naamah says) "all of our friends are here" is reason enough to stay?
